WHAT IS GARBA AND DANDIYA?

Garba & Dandiya are traditional joyful folk dances originating from Gujarat, India usually performed during Navaratri or as a reminder of the Divine Raas Leela of Lord Krishna. It is one of Paramahamsa Vishwananda’s favourite pastimes. Navratri is celebrated to give respect and honour to Goddess Durga for her victory over Demon King Mahishasura during the nine day battle. It is the victory of dharma and peace over evil and ego.

The dance form is a representation of this battle where the the colourful sticks used to perform dandiya represents the sword of Goddess Durga. One of the most popular anecdotes related to Lord Krishna is the Raas Leela. ‘Raas’ means divine dance and ‘Leela’ implies play in Sanskrit. It is the story of an eternal bond between Krishna — an embodiment of universal love — and his devotees. A universal truth that masculine and feminine energies floating in a sea of love and devotion is transformative — that’s the essence of Raas Leela.
