As the devas (Gods) and asuras (Demons) began to churn\, the deadly poison ‘halahala’\, emerged from the ocean and threatened to destroy the world. \nAt the behest of Lord Narayan\, the devas and asuras pleaded Lord Shiva to solve this situation\, to which Lord Shiva swallowed the poison and kept it in His neck. The presence of the poison turned His neck blue\, thus the name\, ‘Neela Kantha’ refers to Lord Shiva as the ‘blue throated one’. \nOn MahaShivratri\, we commemorate this act and also venerate the marriage day between Lord Shiva and His consort\, Parvati Devi. \nDID YOU KNOW?\nShivratri is a time to sincerely pray to Lord Shiva to ask him to install himself in our hearts. As we bathe him in the form of a lingam\, he is cleaning our inner impurities and awakening the devotion within us\, so that we can realise him in our hearts and see him everywhere. \nShivaratri is when you forget about your mind and let your mind dwell only on the Divine. That’s what Shivaratri is – it is uplifting you and really awakening what is deep inside of you. \nParamahamsa Vishwananda \nWHAT TO EXPECT\n\nMahaShivratri begins with evening celebrations start at 18:00 and last until 20:00. During the celebration there will be puja\, abhishekham to Shiva in the form of lingams and abhishekham to Sri Veera Narsimha. Traditionally we show our sincerity by staying awake throughout the night praising the Divine.
